Chocosaurus Rye – The Bruery/Bootlegger’s Brewery Collaboration

7% ABV
Purchased at The Bruery Provisions Store in Orange, CA ($10/25.4 oz. bottle) and poured into tulip glasses
.

This “black rye lager” marks a collaboration between Placentia-based The Bruery and Fullterton’s Bootlegger’s Brewery, and it pours a squid ink black with a rapidly evaporating sandlewood-colored head. The enticing nose contains coffee grounds, vanilla beans, hard alcohol, and some rum cake, and the first swallow follows suit with plenty of alcohol-soaked chocolate and vanilla-flavored coffee. Significant chocolate syrup notes are present on the tongue, but the mouthfeel of Chocosaurus Rye is light and crisp, and it’s actually complemented well by the sharp rye finish. Ultimately, this brew is a curious experiment in tastes and textures – offering rich, syrupy flavors offset by lager lightness and the cleansing presence of rye on the retreat – but it’s not a brew that I would ever particularly crave

Birch Bock (Alaskan Brewing Company)

8.5% ABV
Purchased at The Davis Beer Shoppe ($7.99/22 oz. bottle) and poured into pilsner  glasses.

His Notes:

This Pilot Series release from Alaskan Brewing Company pours a beautiful burnt orange with a tight, off-white head.  The rich nose mixes strong and syrupy malt with mild wood and toffee aromas, and the eye-opening taste offers dessert-style fruit syrup, caramel, and toffee, along with a woody texture that is noticeable without dominating the palette. Brewed with real Alaskan birch syrup, Birch Bock is a strong and distinctive beer with a lingering, malt-heavy aftertaste, but it remains fairly balanced throughout.  Birch Bock doesn’t overdose on the saccharine malt like many bock beers, and the wood flavor is crisper and lighter than most beers of this type due to the use of birch instead of the typical oak or alder

Three Philosophers (Ommegang)

9.8% ABV
Purchased at Corti Brothers ($7.69/25.4 oz. bottle) and poured into wine glasses.

His Notes:

This highly regarded concept beer from Cooperstown-based brewery Ommegang pours a reddish-brown with a sandy brown head.  The smell is of wood, berries, cherries, and wild yeast, and indeed it’s strong and tangy on the tongue, barely bothering to hide its hefty alcohol content.  Sour cherry flavors seep in as the alcohol wallop fades, moving the taste from the brutish darkness of a strong Belgian quad into a mild dessert wine with a sour ale kick.  The skeleton of wood barrels is present throughout, as is the hint of cherries and wild yeast.  Three Philosophers is a little too strong to favorably complement the fruit flavors, and much like a good dessert wine, a little bit of it goes a long way.
